The Choices We Make

Posted on April 16, 2008

choice.jpgThe other day I learned that my brother was back in AA. This is his third trip to AA. I don’t understand how he has allowed his life to be full of addictions and anger. If my mom reads this post, it may upset her, but the point is about more than my brother.

Our lives are the result of the choices we make. Sometimes I wonder how I ended up where I am and my brother ended up where he is, but the answer lies in our choices. He made a choice to start drinking at an early age. He left home at the age of 18 and by-passed college for a job. Although I did my share of under-age drinking, I never let it consume my being. I chose to attend college and get an accounting degree.

One choice I didn’t realize I made was to struggle in my marriage because my husband and I couldn’t naturally conceive a child. At two points in our journey to become parents we contemplated divorce. After many months of marital hell, I decided that my marriage was worth saving. I made a choice to rebuild my marriage so that I could once again experience joy and happiness with my soul mate. Because of the choice I made, my husband and I are once again happily married and we have a great life together. That’s not to say we don’t have any challenges, but today we mange our relationship well.

Unfortunately, we don’t always know if a choice is a good or bad one when we’re in the middle of making it. The decision we made about which RE to use resulted in our twin pregnancy and the premature birth of our daughters. If we had hired a different doctor, would we have gotten pregnant? Would we have become pregnant with twins anyway? Or maybe a singleton? The choice of our RE made a huge impact on our lives and those of our daughters.

I have no regrets, so I think we don’t always know when a choice is good or bad or sometimes we don’t realize we’re making a choice. However, there are times when we know we are making a bad choice. What choices are you making?
