What Will You Do With Your Frozen Embryos?

Posted on August 4, 2009

A few months ago I was interviewed for an article on Parenting.com about the decision my husband and I made regarding our frozen embryos. When we started searching for an RE we never thought to ask what would happen with our frozen embryos if we decided we didn’t want to use them. My original hope was to have left over embryos so that if our IVF cycle didn’t work we could try a frozen cycle before having to do another fresh cycle.

After our twins were born we had to decide what to do with our 3 frozen embryos. The first time we received the annual bill for the storage fee we paid it. When the second bill arrived my husband told me it was time to let them go, but I didn’t want to. It was a difficult decision and one that many couples are starting to address before they start treatments. However, the decision about what to do with your frozen embryos is a tough one.

I can only imagine making that decision. I would not know what to do either. But at some point you have to do something. My initial reaction is to say donate them. But I really couldn’t say. I wish we had had frozen embryos. We were always only able to get 3 embryos out of my batch of eggs.

Wow. My husband and I haven’t reached that phase in our infertile journey yet but something to consider.
