inurhead.jpgThe other day I listened to an interview of a woman that I know and respect. Her business is hypnosis and specifically, fertility hypnosis. As I listened to the interview I found myself shaking my head a few times. Although the interview was full of good information, there were a few points where I disagreed strongly with her message. I had to keep in mind, though, that with hypnosis the goal is to help you overcome obstacles that are keeping you from doing something or to stop doing something, such as to stop smoking.

I’ve used a form of hypnosis. I did so because there were a few issues that were keeping me from being completely happy in my marriage even though I had what I wanted, a family. The hypno-therapy worked and I am forever thankful. However, what I get tired of hearing is, “It is all in your head. If you can overcome the barriers that your mind has created you can become pregnant,” or similar type comments. I do agree, however, that you can use hypnosis or other non-traditional methods in tandem with fertility treatments for those women/couples who have true medical conditions that are keeping them from getting pregnant.

Is part of it in your head. Probably. BUT a lot of women and men who are dealing with infertility actually have a physical medical condition. There are also a lot of women who don’t know how to read their bodies and that can prevent them from knowing when to time intercourse. There are no doubt there are women who have psychological barriers, for what ever reason or possibly a childhood trauma. Hypnosis and other therapies could most definitely work and help them break-down whatever is keeping them from getting pregnant.

Can we cure some medical conditions with the power of our minds. Absolutely. I’m proof. I’ve done this as have many other people I know. Whether it be a life threatening disease or in my case a small pituitary tumor. But not every disease or medical condition can be “cured” with the power of thought without the assistance of traditional (and/or non-traditional) medicine.

Even though I’m not in the throws of infertility - this idea that infertility can be “cured” with a change in mindset is irritating. My husbands MF infertility was the result of a true physical condition. Surgery might have been able to correct his problem, but mindset was unlikely to do anything to improve his sperm quality.

What do you think? Is it all in your head?

Couldn’ agree with you more!! :-) I think hypnotherapy is wonderful for “mind” or “psychologogical issues”, but not true medical issues - unfortunately if that was true, we would probably have a lot less death due to illnesses, don’t you think?
