Infertility In the News
Posted on February 20, 2008
Most of my friends could not relate when my husband and I were diagnosed “infertile.” They had children and thought it was sad my husband and I could not create a child naturally. They had NO idea how infertility ruled my life and changed me and my relationships. There are many articles I’ve read that describe infertility as emotionally devastating as a cancer diagnosis. Don’t believe it, read this article about the psychological affects. Also, studies prove how women react emotionally when diagnosed with infertility. I spent a lot of money on counseling and it was worth every penny! It saved my marriage and helped me come out of my frequent depressive states.
Infertility docs need to be more concerned about the impact of multiple gestation pregnancies. One doctor in Kansas City is taking his trade seriously and wants to ensure his patients become pregnant with ONE baby only. If you’re in Kansas, check out this doctor.
Finally, new research in the UK has determined sperm and eggs can be created by using human bone marrow. However, their studies show that there may be serious health problems when a child is born using this artificial sperm. I’m not sure how I feel about this one yet. More studies need to be done. I understand the desire to have a child that is genetically yours, but at what cost?
Would you compare your emotional state (caused by infertility) with that of a friend diagnosed with cancer? My guess is most people will say no – but why? Are you embarrassed? Is it because infertility is not life threatening? Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system, let’s bring awareness about it to the same level as breast cancer.
