Georgia – Please Take Action to Save IVF

Posted on March 12, 2009

This is a repost of an email I received from RESOLVE:

Everything is at stake.  Please, if you can, drop what you’re doing to help.  You may have written or called before, but we really need you to do it again NOW!  Details below.

On Thursday, March 12, the Senate in Georgia is going to vote on Senate Bill 169 (SB 169), a bill that would severely impair a doctor’s ability to treat infertility patients and will make it harder for us to build families.  Click here for a complete copy of SB 169.

Infertility patients and the people who care about this issue have been coming out by the thousands.  To the legislators, this uproar was unexpected, because in the past infertility patients have been too afraid to speak out.  Well, NO MORE.  We are rising up for the first time to say NO.

NO!  This private, personal decision about how I build my family, what medical treatment I need, where my embryos go that is up to me!

NO!  I will not let my family be denigrated by politicians pursuing some goal of their own, passing laws that work against my best interests.

NO!  I will not let my children, or the children I hope to have, treated like pawns in a political game.

This is about one of the most important things in life having a baby, having a family and we will not let this government take away the medical care we need.  We will not let them take away our hope.

Here is what we at RESOLVE need you to do.

Action Needed IMMEDIATELY

  1. Call, email, or fax the members of the Georgia Senate.  If you already sent a letter, send another one.  If you haven’t called yet, start calling.  If you have already called and sent letters, do it again, and ask your friends and family to do it again. Keep it up throughout the day on Thursday, March 12.  Click here to send an updated letter to the Georgia Senators.  Click on this link to find a list of Georgia Senators – click on each name to find their office phone number. http://www.legis.ga.gov/legis/2009_10/senate/senatelist.php
  2. COME, if you possibly can, please COME to the State Capitol on Thursday, March 12!
  3. Come to the State Capitol in Atlanta 3rd floor.
  4. Come any time between 10:00-7:00 PM.  (We don’t know when SB 169 will be heard, although it is late on the agenda so please come anytime after 10:00 AM and before  7:00 PM)
  5. Bring your family.  If you have been fortunate enough to be a parent by any means, it would be wonderful if you could bring your child or children (or a photograph) to remind the lawmakers that this is about real people, real women, men, mothers, fathers, and children.  If you are building your family right now, please come and share your story.
  6. When you arrive on the 3rd floor, look for Renee, Ruth, Sara, or Chuck.
  7. We hope you will have a chance to talk to your Senator FACE TO FACE.  There is a procedure to do that, and the above volunteers will help you.

If you are interested in visiting the Capitol on March 12, click here for further details on what you will be doing and how to prepare yourself.

Please take action right now, if you possibly can.  The future of good medical care for infertility in Georgia is at stake.  We don’t want SB 169 to pass tomorrow.  If it does, it goes to the Georgia House of Representatives and that would be the last legislative hurdle to this bill becoming law in Georgia.

Your voices your calls, your faxes, your emails have made a difference already, causing the lawmakers to change their bill.  But SB 169 is still bad for us and for the babies we hope to have.  We’re using every last ounce of energy we have to oppose SB 169.  Please, do all you can, too.  Tomorrow may be too late.

Click here to send an updated letter to the Georgia Senators, Lt. Governor and Governor. If you have sent previous letters, send this NEW letter now! It only takes 1 minute!

THANK YOU!

Warm Regards,

Barbara Collura
