Five Embryos
Posted on August 11, 2008
Five embryos were transferred for an IVF cycle by a Reproductive Endocrinologist in Arizona. FIVE. The woman, luckily, is pregnant with a single baby. FIVE.
The story goes… After failed cycles (I don’t know how many because I came into the conversation late) she and her husband decided to take every risk in hopes to become pregnant. This was their last shot as they were out of money and couldn’t afford to do one more treatment. The RE agreed and transferred five embryos.
Something like this wouldn’t have to happen if we had insurance coverage. Couple’s wouldn’t be so desperate and risk high-order multiples if money wasn’t a factor. I’m not sure I would be daring enough to transfer five embryos. Yet, I have never been in this situation.
What would you do?

In all honesty – it would be really hard for me NOT to say, put ‘em all back in. After going through all the expense and effort month after month and knowing that this could very well be our “last” shot, I would probably do the same thing. Even knowing that it could be very bad, knowing about the NICU, knowing that I would not ever be able to agree to selective reduction. That desire to have a child can completely override any rational thought.
I agree – with insurance, a lot of the pressure to up the chances wouldn’t have to be there.
I just transferred 5 embryos and I am blessed to have insurance so that didn’t affect my decision. The first IVF it was 4 and 2 took but I miscarried, frozen cycle we had 2 put in and none took and this time we put in 5. There are sooo many factors that affect the decision and the doctors recommendation. For us it was age. I just turned 40 so statistics and odds take a drastic turn.
