Family Building Legislation
Posted on March 18, 2009
Georgia SB169 is a step in the wrong direction for infertility. Thankfully the first version of this bill failed, however, it was passed by the Senate after many revisions. The consequences to the infertility community if this bill passes the House will be HUGE. This bill is not just about Georgia, it’s about the rest of the U.S. If passed, this legislation will set a precedence for the remaining 49 states to follow. This is BAD!
In November, the voters of Colorado defeated the “embryo as a person legislation.” I’m hopeful that the Georgia SB169 will fail in the house. RESOLVE will release a summary of the revised bill as soon as they get a chance to review it, hopefully that will be soon. Whether you live in Georgia or not this bill will impact you. Limiting the availability of IVF or the number of embryos that can be retrieved, fertilized, and transferred should not be the decision of the legislative body.
