Dr. Gary Steinman is the co-author of Womb Mates, A Modern Guide to Fertility and Twinning. Dr. Steinman is a practicing Ob/Gyn in New York. He delivered a set of idential quads and his interest in twinning started along with his extensive research in this area. His book is very interesting as it provides both technical details about twins as well as some of the soft-topic information.
As you may know, I’m a big proponent about providing information on the risk of a twin/triplet pregnancy. Although I truly believe and advocate for the right to assisted reproductive technologies (ART), I would love to see a reduction of twins because of the risk to the mom and the babies. I think you’ll enjoy the information Dr. Steinman provides in this podcast about spontaneous and ART twinning.
A few items we discuss in this podcast are:
1. What increases your chances for conceiving twins with spontaneous conception (vs. ART). We briefly discuss how IGF applies (or doesn’t apply) to ART. Dr. Steinman talks about calcium – something you might want to discuss with your RE. Di d you know that ICSI results in the highest rate of ART twins.
2. In spontanous pregnancies, age plays a role in twinning, but the reverse is true with regard to ART. Hear his thoughts and scientic information on both the man’s and woman’s age and fertility treatments.
3. His advice – be cautious when undergoing ART to minimize the risk of a twin pregnancy.
Insurance coverage – Dr. Steinman believes it would reduce the rate of twins. He agrees that one of the problems in the U.S. with regard to ART is the financial drain to couples. Hear what they do in Israel – you’ll want to move there!

Looks like an interesting book. After 11 years of infertility we were hoping for twins when we started down the IVF road, as I think many of us do. But I had no idea what was ahead of me from a PG standpoint. We were lucky that our boys were born healthy but I had some major issues. I now understand why my clinic wants singleton pregnancies.
Silver, Thanks for your comments on my blog. I too wanted twins, but after experiencing premature babies – I’m all for singleton pregnancies! My clinic didn’t warn us about the risks of twins, but that seems to be coming more common now.
Sounds interesting. I agree people really don’t know the risks of a twin pregnancy. I got lucky with the pregnancy, but delivery was a nightmare. Thankfully we were all eventually ok.
I think that many people are in love with the idea of twins – but may not be adequately prepared for the realities of complications in a twin pregnancy, as well as the risks involved when having a premature baby – or two !
Luckily along with the higher incidences of twins now, more information and education is also increasing.
i loved this book! it was fascinating! i also hadthe priviledge of meeting the author on various occasions. he is a lovely man! i myself am a twin. unfortunatley i was deprived of oxygen during delivery and i am not as smart as my identical twin sister. im on a 6th grade reading level even though i am 22 years old. i hope that one day i can recover fully and finally finish this book! its taken me quite some time!
