tv.jpgThere are a few shows that I really like. I’m not the kind of person to record a show to watch it at a later time, if I miss it I just have to play catch-up once I see the next episode and try to figure out what I missed. Thankfully, most shows aren’t too difficult to follow if you miss a few weeks. Last night I got sucked into Desperate Housewives (my husband calls it desperate *hores), although last night I determined that I don’t enjoy the show as much as I used too. I also got sucked into Brothers and Sisters. An interesting show with a lot of drama, some of which I find more humorous than sad.

I walked in at a point in the show where Kitty and her husband (don’t know his TV name…i.e., Rob Lowe) were obviously in a fertility clinic. They were talking about shots and harvesting eggs, not everyday conversation at an Ob/Gyn practice or with a general practitioner. Although I am grateful for the awareness shows like Brothers and Sisters bring to the general public about infertility, it could be a little more realistic. In one scene Kitty was standing up while Rob Lowe gave her the injection of the fertility med. Depending on the med, I gave myself the shots as my husband was too terrified to do so and it was just easier for me to do it. But there were a few injections that needed to enter muscle and the buttocks was the recommended location, those I took lying down, not standing up. I don’t recall every getting or taking an injection standing up. Do you?

This is the second sibling in Brothers and Sisters to deal with infertility. One of Kitty’s brothers and his wife (again, don’t remember their screen or actual names for that matter - I’m so bad with this kind of stuff) went through infertility treatments, if I recall correctly it was IVF, and had premature twins. One of the twins died and then the couple become estranged, both cheating on the other and then made their way back together. Something that no doubt happens in real life. I remember crying when I watched that episode as I could relate to having premature twins in the NICU with one struggling and the other doing well.

Even though they are small gestures by the writers, shows like Brothers and Sisters, Gray’s Anatomy, and Family Practice (the Gray’s Anatomy spin-off) all do their part to bring awareness about infertility and premature birth. If for no other reason, I’ll keep watching these shows in hopes that they stay on the air and a few people might just pick up on these medical issues that impact millions of lives each year.
